Frostburg — Weather permitting, the inaugural Shamrock Shuffle 2.62K run and walk scheduled for an 11 a.m. start in Frostburg will continue as planned.

The final decision, however, will be made by about 9 a.m. on Thursday by Christine Werner, race director, in consultation with city officials. A primary concern expressed by city officials is that a sufficient workforce might not be available to set up and take down barricades for the course, which starts and finishes at City Place at 14 S. Water St.

More than a foot of snow is expected to fall in the Mountain City beginning Tuesday night and not ending until Wednesday evening. With a winter storm taking 30 or more hours to fall, snow removal will fully extend the city’s resources.

The event, proceeds from which will benefit the Frostburg Food Pantry, has already generated a respectable amount of support from volunteers runners, walkers and local businesses despite being planned in about two weeks’ time.

“It’s a tough call to make, but we certainly understand the limitations of the city’s workforce,” said Kevin Spradlin, executive director of the Potomac Highlands Distance Club. “As of right now, the event’s a ‘go,’ but the final decision will be made Thursday shortly after 9 a.m. This can sometimes happen when anybody plans an outdoor event in Mountain Maryland in mid-March.”

If the event is canceled, full refunds would be offered to pre-registered participants, Spradlin said, and donations from businesses also would be returned. If the event continues as scheduled, race-day registration will begin at 10 a.m. at City Place.
