STRINGTOWN, Pa., Feb. 16, 2013 — Nearly four minutes separated the top male from his closest competitor, as well as the top female from hers.Hobos

It was a record-setting day in the third running of the Hobo’s Heartbreaker 10K road race in southern Bedford County. The event was staged on Cooks Mill Road, with a start and finish at Cooks Mill United Methodist Church. The race was sponsored by Heavenly Prints Digital Media, in LaVale, Hobo’s Restaurant, of Ellerslie, and GTS Therapeutics, of McHenry.

In the men’s race, it was all Robbie Jenkins, all the time. From the outset, the 29-year-old from Ridgeley, W.Va., established himself as the man to beat. He cruised through the first mile in 6 minutes, 7 seconds and already held a respectable lead over eventual runner-up Ron Hamric.

Jenkins said posted on Facebook he was “happy” with his overall time of 38:10.8, but that he “probably left a solid minute on the course.” Still, Jenkins obliterated the previous course record of 40:01, set by Jim Jordan in the race’s inaugural year in 2009.

Jenkins cruised through Mile 2 — the most difficult section of the out-and-back course — in 6:34, then hit the downhill to the midway point at 6:26 (19:41 cumulative). He almost flew through the second half, posting miles of 6:09, 5:45 and 5:58.GTS_Therapeutics

“(I) ran the front half of the course pretty conservatively, ’cause I didn’t know what to expect on miles two (and) three,” Jenkins said in a Facebook message. “Picked it up on second half.”

Hamric, 56, of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., took second in 42:03.9. He paced Heather Parks, 37, also of Bruceton Mills, through much of the first half of the course.

Like Jenkins, Parks quickly separated herself from the rest of the field. After the race, she mentioned she’s still working her way back into shape after giving birth last August, but 75 percent of the field wouldn’t know that Parks wasn’t up to par. Parks stopped the clock in 44:08.9, crushing the previous course best established by Mary Jane Baniak, of Keyser, W.Va. Baniak finished in 50:09 in 2010, when the course was covered with snow and ice.

Saturday’s conditions were much clearer, and Baniak earned second place in the women’s standings with a time of 48:06.7. While the women’s course record now belongs to Parks, Baniak, 40, took over the top spot in fastest times on the course by a female masters runner. Baniak busted the previous record of 53:00, set by Karen Young, of Boyds, Md., in that snowy 2010 race.

In a hastily scheduled 5K edition, 12-year-old Joseph Patterson — whose driveway on Grange Hall road served as one of two water stations — claimed the top spot with a time of 36:07.3. He edged his mother, first-time-racer Mary Pattesron, 42, who finished in 36:21. Race walker Sherry Obert was the top grand masters (50-plus) finisher, in 38:11.5, while husband and fellow race walker Bill Obert, 65, took the men’s masters title in 44:15.8.

A huge thanks to event sponsors and volunteers, including Noah, Kenzie, Stephanie, Jason, Wanda, Lindsay, and also to the board of Londonderry Township supervisors and Cooks Mill United Methodist Church.
