Join PHDC – run the shirt run

  • First shirt run date is March 26, 2016. Details/shirt order form coming soon.

The Potomac Highlands Distance Club will return to action in the tri-state area in 2016 with a limited schedule — and a brand new way for you to become a member. Membership dues are gone!

Borrowing traditions from running clubs in NC and NJ, lifetime membership in the PHDC will now be secured by completing a shirt run. The shirt run will be a supported, organized training run. The distance is approximately 17 miles and is run on the Great Allegheny Passage from Meyersdale, Pa., to Frostburg, Md. The rail trail surface is crushed limestone and includes going through the 3,294-foot-long Big Savage Tunnel. It’s suggested that runners bring a headlamp or flashlight (which will be available at the midway point, and runners will carry those items with them to the finish line). The course will be staged on what previously was the PHDC’s Run for Gold Metric Marathon.

How it works

There is no entry fee, though shirts must be preordered. There will be a limited number of runners and walkers accepted into each shirt run. To guarantee your spot, simply complete the PDF shirt order form and mail it with payment (amount is on order form). Forms will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Roughly twice a year, the PHDC will announce a shirt run on the club website  and on the PHDC Facebook page, and at the end of the run – which will have a defined start line and start time – runners and walkers will be encouraged to sign up to participate (with the four-legged canine friends on leashes welcome and eligible for membership). The scheduling of these runs are tentative and depend on the opening and closing of the Big Savage Tunnel each Spring and Winter.

The real fun begins with the second shirt run and beyond. That’s when aspiring PHDC members get to run with returning PHDC members (those who already have completed a shirt run) on the shirt run course. There will be no limit on the number of returning PHDC members who want to complete a 2nd, 3rd (etc.) shirt run.

With any luck, donations – along with proceeds from PHDC-managed races – will also cover the cost of PHDC stickers for each finisher as well as food and drink that will be at the finish line of each hat run.

These runs in NC were an awful lot of fun, from start to finish (and before and after). Here’s a story I wrote in NC about the May 2014 shirt run for the Mangum Track Club. It’ll give you an idea of what’s hoped for here.

Get the information you need here for all things Potomac Highlands Distance Club. The club, affiliated with the Road Runners Club of America since October 2008, strives to stage safe, low-cost competitive opportunities from Morgantown to Shepherdstown and the surrounding areas.

PHDC, formerly the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club, has helped to raise well over $80,000 for charities in the tri-state area. In addition, more than $8,000 has been awarded in cash prizes at the finish line of competitive footraces. We value opportunity and competition, along with promoting health and wellness in our neighborhood (and yours).

PHDC’s membership rates were among the lowest in the quad-state (WV, VA, MD and PA) area for any RRCA-affiliated organization, but the decision was made to eliminate them anyway.
