Guaranteed PR: Run a new distance

TUMWATER,Wash., June 15, 2012 — So what if you’re not in the shape you want to be. It’s still possible to set a personal best. There’s a trick, though: Run a distance you never have raced before.

That’s what I did on June 15 at Tumwater High School. In anticipation of the South Sound All-Comers Track Meet, I planned to run the 1,500-meter run along with the 800, 3,000 and 1,600 relay.

On Thursday, I skipped the 800 but at the last minute (with no small amount of cajoling from Coach), I went ahead and entered the 3,000. Glad I did, too. A personal best (12:33), ’cause I’d never contested that distance before, and I wasn’t too far off my 3,200 PR (12:46.8 in December 2007 on an indoor track.

There are two more meets in the summer series: June 21 and June 28, also at Tumwater High School. Events begin at 6 p.m. I know that if I go back in two weeks and run the 3,000 again, I’m bound to set another PR. That might seem like cheating to some. But at my age, I’ll take it.
