ELK GARDEN, W.Va. — Oh so close.

Ian MacFawn, formerly of LaVale, Md., and now a resident of Weston, W.Va., outlasted Lucas Young to cross the finish line first among 91 finishers on Saturday at the 7th annual Conquer the Dam 5K at Jennings-Randolph Lake in Elk Garden.

MacFawn, 25, posted a time of 17 minutes, 35.4 seconds, which put him less than five seconds off the course record of 17:31, set in 2015 by Gavin Caupp. Young, 22, of Ridgeley, finished second to MacFawn in 17:53 while Frankfort High School cross country runner Robert Weaver, 16, also of Ridgeley, rounded out the top three with a time of 19:44.9.

Krystal Stair, 31, of Cumberland, Md., earned the women’s title in 23:04.4, 43 seconds ahead of runner-up Jenny Emerick, 46, also of Cumberland. Stair’s effort placed her sixth overall. LeAnna Haines, 37, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., 25:49.9.

It was Stair’s second consecutive Conquer the Dam 5K victory and she has shown significant progression over the years. In 2017, she placed fourth overall and stopped the clock in 23:13. In 2016, Stair was second female — behind Garrett County’s Jen Sober — in 25:00.7, good for eighth overall. In 2015, Stair placed 13th overall and, again, runner-up female, posting a time of 26:00.2. In 2014, she was 12th overall and (again) second woman, this time in 25:58.9.
