FRIZZELLBURG, Md., Saturday,  Nov. 3, 2012 — When there’s not a race nearby the house on a given weekend, sometimes a runner is forced to look a bit further away.

And sometimes, that extra effort can pay off. The Westminster Road Runners Club, along with Frank and Sharon Schaeffer, hosted the annual Frizzellburg Cross Country run on the Shaeffers’ property located a few miles west of Westminster. And for $2 (WRRC members) or $4 (general public), the course challenged everyone with several hills and a few muddy turns.

Each finisher was recognized and awarded a custom bandana and finisher’s certificate with name and time. Not bad for only a few dollars!

Who knows how many people this event might attract in the future? The next day, just down the road in nearby New Market, there is the annual Run through the Grapevine 8K cross country race. The race has sold out at more than 700 runners. It’s clear that harriers are not quite ready for XC season to end.

Regardless, we can rely on Frank and Sharon to keep the hometown, small-race flavor — which is perfect for this family farm setting.
