KEYSER, W.Va, July 6, 2013 — If Ryan Bowser were an animal trainer, he might simply have been able to tell the dog days of summer, now fully upon us, to heel.

No matter how he did it, the 23-year-old Grantsville, Md., harrier led a field of 53 runners on a day that the oppressive heat and humidity remained at bay — at least for a short while — in the 24th annual Kiwanis Independence Day 5K (3.1-mile) double out-and-back road race. The event is staged by race director Joe Altobello and the Keyser Kiwanis Breakfast Club, which operates a number of community programs in Mineral County.

Bowser earned the win by stopping the clock in 16 minutes and 45.8 seconds, more than 26 seconds ahead of runner-up Shane May, 38, of Bedford, Pa. Bowser’s performance was more than a minute faster than last year’s winning time and the fastest winning time since at least 2008. May earned a 17:12.1 and Potomac Highlands Distance CLub member Robbie Jenkins, the 2011 winner, was third in 17:57. Jenkins, 29, of Ridgeley, W.Va., was the third and final runner under the 18-minute mark.

Former Keyser High School distance standout Joshua Biser was fourth overall. The 19-year-old finished in 18:41.3, just ahead of masters winner Bradford Deel, 50, of Scott Depot, W.Va. Deel’s time was 18:52.7 in what was arguably the most competitive age division. Deel won the men’s 50-59 group, while PHDC member Mike Meadows (56, of Martinsburg) was second in 19:19 and Neal Riemenschneider (58, of Winchester, Va.) was third in 21:18.6.
