LITTLE ORLEANS, MD — There will be three weekends of organized training runs scheduled for this year’s Fire on the Mountain 50K and 25K training cycle. There will be options in September and October. Race day is Sunday, Nov. 1 in Green Ridge State Forest, located in eastern Allegany County, Maryland.

The rules: RSVP (by email is best) is required to attend for every participant. Should no one RSVP, the training run will be cancelled by 10 p.m. the night before. Runners do not have to be registered for FOTM to participate. There is no charge. These runs are meant to be self-supported — bring your own water/sports drink/food.

The schedule:
Sunday, Sept. 6 at 8:30 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 7 at 8 a.m. (cancelled due to lack of RSVPs)
Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m.
Sunday, Oct. 4 at 8 a.m.

The meet-up location for all four training dates is the same: The equestrian field at the intersection of Carroll and Oldtown Orleans roads, which is about 400 meters from thePoint Lookout Overlook start line. Click here for a Google Maps link (simply plug in your starting point for directions).

Each training run will have a minimum suggested distance of 8.9 miles. Keeping in mind the distance many travel to participate in these training runs, however, additional distance can easily be added on. Of course, the extra distance is optional.

There will be COVID-related changes to this year’s format. Instead of attempting a point-to-point run each time out, this year the training runs will offer loop or out-and-back options in order to limit contact between runners inside vehicles.

Otherwise, Green Ridge State Forest offers 48,000 acres of wilderness, making the concept of social distancing quite natural.
