Ryan1DEEP CREEK LAKE STATE PARK, Md., Jan. 19, 2013 — Grantsville’s Ryan Bowser let a few folks keep close to him early in the annual Snowflake Chase 5-mile race on Saturday at Deep Creek Lake State Park.

Shortly after hitting the turnaround point on the out-and-back road course, Bowser, in orange, pulled away from anyone who thought they had a chance. After a difficult fourth mile, the 22-year-old widened the gap en route to the finish line near the Discovery Center. Bowser stopped the clock in 28 minutes and 52 seconds.

Runner-up Andrew Diffenderfer, 29, of Ashburn, Va., was pleased with his 32:31 performance, especially because he wasn’t sure of his weekend race plans and had charged through the previous week with regular training, including solid workouts on Tuesday and Thursday.

Lena Railey, 30, of McHenry, earned first place in the women’s division — and fifth overall in 33:57. Heather Parks, of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., was second (34:10) and Jen Sober, 39, of McHenry, was third (36:10).

The day was chilly, especially with the wind gusts coming off the lake. But it was a far cry from last year’s snow-covered course, which slowed many runners considerably.

Proceeds from this year’s event benefit the Garrett College Lakers cross country team. Coach Angie Sincell served as race director, with Garrett College athletes assisting at the two water stations.
