SMITHSBURG, Md., July 21, 2012 — For the second time in race history, the Potomac Highlands Distance Club is a sponsor of the annual Bill Beckwith Memorial 5K race and 1-mile fun run, set for July 21 in Smithsburg, Md.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Smithsburg High School cross country program, of which PHDC executive director Kevin Spradlin was a member for two — and the best — of his four high school cross country campaigns.
The 5K is a single-loop course on the road, beginning and finishing at Veterans Park on West Water Street. Before 2010, the race used a different loop and began and ended near the start line of the cross country team’s fall start line.
Beckwith was an avid runner and former town councilman. I knew him as a father of two kids — Megan and Ben — both of whom ran for the Leopards’ cross country teams.
“I know it sounds like a cliche, but this event is the epitome of a community benefit run in a small town,” said Spradlin, who ran under the guidance of former XC coach Herb Taber while at Smithsburg in the falls of 1994 and 1995. As a sophomore in 1994, he posted a 5K personal best of 17 minutes and 22 minutes — which remains his PR at that distance — on a competitive team. “This is a fun event with great people and a great course.”
