MOUNT SAVAGE, Feb. 20 -- A full 25 percent of the entire field at next weekend's Class 1A-2A West Region wrestling championship will be comprised of student-athletes from Maryland's two westernmost counties.

Southern Garrett, which won its fifth straight Bi-County Tournament on Saturday, automatically had all 10 of its finalists advance to the regional tournament Feb. 25 and Feb. 26 at North Hagerstown. The Rams also had one qualify based on points accumulated during the season.

Mountain Ridge also had 10 advance, including five from being finalists in the Bi-County Tournament and five more based on points. Northern Garrett moved eight wrestlers ahead, Fort Hill has five traveling to Hagerstown and Allegany's Andy Day, who was pinned in the Bi-County finals at 285 pounds, is the only Camper to qualify.

Each of the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Class 1A-2A state tournament scheduled for March 4-5 in College Park.

Southern Garrett leads Garrett and Allegany counties with three No. 1 seeds: freshman Coy Ozias at 103 and seniors Lex Ozias (152) and Jakob "Bubba" Scheffel (171).

At 189 pounds, Jason Wright of Mountain Ridge has the only other top seed from the area. There's not much separation between him and No. 4 seed Jason Opel of Northern Garrett, however. Wright won a 1-0 decision over Opel on Saturday in the championship bout at the Bi-County Tournament.

The regional meet takes the top eight wrestlers from each weight class. However, some divisions have more than eight qualified wrestlers. In those instances, the lowest seed - for example, Northern's Sean Kamp at 152 - will face the top seed (in this instance, Southern's Lex Ozias) in a "wrestle-in" match.
