Rams win fifth straight Bi-County Tournament wrestling championship
* Seventh team win in last eight years

By Kevin Spradlin
The Potomac Highlands Dispatch

FROSTBURG, Feb. 19 - Fort Hill senior James Bender said no one wants to finish in second place in the Bi-County Tournament.

Bender certainly didn't. In the 160-pound bout against Southern Garrett's Dale Marple, he went for the win. And got it, earning a 6-5 decision to become the second of three Sentinels to win individual titles on Saturday at Mountain Ridge. Marple made it anything but easy on Bender, who said he'd wrestled and beaten Marple in the past but this time, Marple "wanted it much more."

Southern Garrett, meanwhile, won five individual titles to win its fifth straight Bi-County Tournament championship and seventh in the past eight years. Still, Rams coach Dave Taylor said the five-school tourney is merely a stepping stone toward next weekend's regional championship at North Hagerstown.

"We did pretty well today," Taylor said of the Rams, who earned spots in 10 of the 14 contested championship matches  - winning five of them - and took home the team title with 186 points. "We lost five of 10. We always have some improvement to do."

At 160, Bender said although all finalist advance to next weekend's regional tournament in Hagerstown, "people are usually trying to go for gold."

"They say the unhappiest guy in the tournament is the guy who comes out with a silver. You get there (to the finals) ... You want first more than anything."
