FROSTBURG, Md., Dec. 17 - Hopefully, not too many fans who watched Friday night as Bishop Walsh rushed to a 16-point lead over host Allegany went home early.
If they did, they'd likely never imagined the same game they left later featured three ties and four lead changes and two overtime periods before the visiting Spartans put the Campers away, 60-56, before a packed audience at Allegany High School.
In the end, however, Bishop Walsh finished just as it started - a pass from sophomore Quincy Redmon to junior Pat Jones. Jones raced to the opposite end of the court after getting the inbounds pass with about 25 seconds to play in the second overtime period. Jones went the length of the court - Allegany senior Sam Hofacker could do little but watch - and put in the final bucket.
Two free throws by Kammari Powell gave the Spartans (1-1 overall, 1-1 in Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference play) the go-ahead points - finally, after a mere 38 minutes and 25 seconds.
Four early 3-pointers - three from Jones and another by Devin Hawley - helped the Spartans race to a 16-2 lead with 1:51 left in the first quarter. Allegany didn't change until 3:08 into the game. Aaron Murphy, who finished with 13 points, hit two free throws.
The Campers hit their first three field goals over the next two minutes to pull within 18-19 but Bishop Walsh went on a 9-2 run to extend its lead 27-11.
Allegany coach Tedd Eirich must have delivered one heck of a halftime message in the locker room. The Campers (1-2, 1-2 AMAC) came out shooting. After a bucket by Drew O'Neal within the first 2:54 of the third quarter, Bishop Walsh's lead had been cut to 11 points.
O'Neal followed up about a minute later with a 3-pointer and Murphy's putback had Allegany within nine at 40-31. The third period ended with the Spartans holding a 41-33 lead.
