FROSTBURG, Feb. 26 -- Fort Hill was unable to take advantage of a slow start by Mountain Ridge and fell 61-32 to the Miners on Saturday night in a Class 1A West Region western sectional playoff game.
Madi Nightengale led Mountain Ridge with 21 points. Carlie Lewis had 15 points and Sarah Raines added 10 points for the Miners, who outrebounded the Sentinels 40-21.
Miners coach Valery Broadwater adjusted to Fort Hill's defensive schemes and substituted until finding just the right combination of players. After trailing by three points at the end of the first quarter, Mountain Ridge led 21-18 at halftime by returning to the fundamentals.
After the break, the Miners broke loose for 24 points in the third quarter and outscored Fort Hill 40-14 in the second half.
Mountain Ridge shot 50 percent from the two-point range, led by Nightengale's 9-for-12 shooting.
