Huskies escape refs, Romney with 57-56 AMAC win over Hampshire on road
* Northern Garrett whistled for 13 fouls in first half alone

ROMNEY, W.Va., Feb. 8 -- Coach Al Straley and members of the Hampshire girls basketball team didn't seem interested in being a part of any recordsetting performances.
Instead, the Trojans had in mind to simply play a basketball game. And while several words - other than 'simple' - could be used to describe the foul-calling, whistle-happy officials, there was, indeed, a basketball game.
"The girls played with a renewed intensity," Straley said of his Trojans, who lost 60-46 to the same Huskies on Jan. 5 in Accident.
These, however, were hardly the same Trojans. The team, Straley said, "had a hop back in our step."
"We played very aggressively for the entire 32 minutes," Straley said. "You've got to have that intensity and will to go after it."
Six times the game was tied. Though Northern Garrett took a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Hampshire managed to climb back and take a 56-55 lead after Lyndsay Whetzel hit a short jumper with 52.6 seconds left.
"They were just one better than us," Straley said of the Huskies.
Indeed they were. Kaitlynn Fratz, who scored 31 points and became the all-time career scorer in Garrett County high school basketball history - boys or girls - drove through traffic and hit a layup with 27 seconds to go for the final basket of the game.
Hampshire's Lyndsay Whetzel took a pass near the net from Lindsey Miller, bounced off Northern sophomore Allison Yommer and put up the final shot. The ball bounced harmlessly off the front of the rim and into Yommer's waiting hands.
