Trojans get best of
short-staffed Sentinels

* Fort Hill keeps it close early
* Down 14-10, Hampshire pulls away in 23-2 run over 5:40 stretch

ROMNEY, W.Va., Feb. 12 -- It was senior night on Saturday at Hampshire High School. And the Trojans were coming off a 57-56 loss to Northern Garrett earlier in the week in which they had the lead with less than 21 seconds to play.

So this game against visiting Fort Hill was a chance for the Trojans to make a statement. And for all in attendance, that message was received loud and clear.

In a for better or for worse situation for the Sentinels, two of their starters weren't around to hear it. Post player Molly Mandell injured in the Southern Garrett game and could be out for the season. Fellow starter Ashley O'Neal was ill and did not suit up.

After a back-and-forth effort over the first six minutes that saw Fort Hill's 14-10 lead evaporate to a 21-16 disadvantage at the end of the first quarter, the Trojans scored the first 12 points of the second period to up 33-16.

The Sentinels were limited to just two field goals in the period and Hampshire finished out the first half on a 17-5 run.

Hampshire's tenacious defensive effort pulled back to start the third period and the Sentinels - who entered the half with four players having three fouls each - outscored the Trojans 10-9.

But Kassi Smith's field goal with 1:07 left in the third quarter proved to be Fort Hill's second-to-last non-free throw of the game. The Sentinels were held to just one field goal in the fourth and two free throws.
