Nip and tuck all the way, Huskies lose close one on road at Hampshire High
* Trojans sweep season series

For The Potomac Highlands Dispatch
ROMNEY, W.Va., Feb. 11 -- Another one slipped away.

Coach Chris Elliott and the Northern Garrett boys basketball team lost an opportunity to improve its playoff seeding by suffering a 68-66 AMAC loss on the road Friday night at Hampshire.

Elliott said the key to the game was in the last few minutes of the second quarter. The Huskies led 25-23 with about 2:30 to play. Elliott said the goal was to grab a rebound, make a basket and run out the clock until halftime.

Four turnovers helped spur a 10-0 run that earned the Trojans a seven-point lead at the break.

"We could never get back," Elliott said.

Hampshire made 16 of 28 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and 27 of 43 for the game. Jordan Nelson led the way with 11-of-16 shooting and finished with 19 points. Dane Heavener tacked on 17 points, including 7-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe.

"It just comes down to that two-minute stretch to end the second quarter," Elliott said. "The very first shot (of the third quarter) they came out ... They hit a 3-pointer, put them up 10. We came up short."

The Huskies drew within two on multiple occasions in the second half but couldn't quite pull even.

Steven Holtschneider finished with five rebounds and four assists for Northern and Austin Doerr added five rebounds. Matt Gibson led the visiting team with 21 points, followed closely by Tyler Wilt's 19 points.

Hampshire beat Northern at the Igloo three days ago, 59-54.
