Northern Garrett returns to winning ways in 71-46 victory
Holtschneider a 'difference-maker' for NG

ACCIDENT, Jan. 24 -- Though the Huskies won by 25 points and substituted liberally in the fourth quarter, Northern Garrett boys basketball coach Chris Elliott wasn't breathing easy at the end of the third quarter.
Then, just before the buzzer, the seventh-ranked Huskies got a bucket from Patrick Sines for a 12-point lead, 49-37. Then Northern Garrett's defense limited the Elks to a single field goal in the final eight minutes as the Huskies pulled away. Limeted to just nine points in the first quarter, Northern averaged slightly less than 21 points per quarter over the final three periods for the non-conference victory.
"I told these guys Salisbury isn't a slouch," Elliott said afterward.
Elliott said the Elks recently have put up 65, 83 and 85 points in a game.
"This is not a really bad Salisbury team," Elliott said, but "from years before, Salisbury's never been really competitive."
For eight minutes, Northern Garrett thought it was. Standout point guard Matt Gibson secured two of the Huskies' first three fouls and was held scoreless in the second quarter.
Elliott said the Huskies tried scoring on the inside but that didn't work. Instinctively, the team began resorting to its preferred perimeter shooting, but "they weren't falling."
"After a little convincing, tell them we need to get going, then we started playing," Elliott said.
