Huskies do 'just enough' to
edge visiting Moorefield, 54-49
Gibson's 11 fourth-quarter points seal win
For The Potomac Highlands Dispatch
ACCIDENT, Feb. 2 -- Northern Garrett boys basketball coach Chris Elliott said "it was not a very pretty game" but "we did just enough for us to win" against visiting Moorefield, 54-49, on Wednesday at the Igloo for a non-conference win.
Elliott said the offense, led by Matt Gibson's 25 points, committed 20 turnovers and the defense limited the Yellow Jackets to just 15 points, including four points in the second quarter.
"we won the game at the foul line tonight, going 17-for-24," Elliott said in an e-mail.
Elliott said many of his team's turnovers were committed in the second half, which allowed Moorefield easy transition points. The Yellow Jackets scored 16 points in the third quarter alone and tacked on 18 points in the fourth to make it a five-point game.
Gibson scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth period, when he went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Huskies play at home today against Fort Hill then, on Friday, host Mountain Ridge, which beat top-ranked Southern Garrett this week.
