NEW CREEK, W.Va., Feb. 18 -- A little change, according to Sheryl Crow, can do you good.
It certainly worked out for the Keyser boys basketball team in a 66-45 nonconference win over Petersburg on Friday night. The Golden Tornado opened with a man to man defense that let the Vikings take a 17-6 lead after eight minutes and a 29-23 halftime lead.
During intermission, Keyser coach Gary Liston switched things up. The Golden Tornado's use of a 2-3 zone defense in the second half was as good as its man to man defense was bad.
Keyser rode the change - and a combined 30 points and 20 rebounds from Damon Thorne and Peyton Hartman - to a dominating final two quarters of play in which the Vikings were outscored 43-16. In the last 11 minutes and 10 seconds - just after Dustin Fertig hit a bucket off an assist from Hartman - Keyser limited Petersburg to just eight points.
Wes Washington added 14 points, eight assists and four steals in the victory. Fertig added nine pionts and four assists while Hartman contributed three assists and blocked three shots.
Keyser next travels to Hampshire on Tuesday to face the hot-shooting Trojans. Then the Golden Tornado host Bishop Walsh on Feb. 24 and Washington on Feb. 25 to wrap up the regular season.
