Trojans solve foul shooting woes to
sink Huskies, 59-54, in AMAC victory

* Smelser shoots 7-for-7 from the charity stripe in fourth quarter
* Huskies' three-game win streak snapped

For The Potomac Highlands Dispatch
ACCIDENT, Feb. 8 -- "I think we let one slip away," Northern Garrett boys basketball coach Chris Elliott said.

He might be right. The Huskies sent visiting Hampshire to the foul line 21 times in the first three quarters. The Trojans made only 10 of those shots - less than 50 percent - and the Huskies managed a 43-42 lead after three periods.

The fourth quarter was a different story altogether. In fact, it might have been a different Hampshire team. Then, the Trojans made 13 of 15 shots from the foul line - a remarkable 86.7 percent - and outscored the Huskies 17-11 overall in the final frame to pull away, 59-54, for the AMAC win.

Robbie Smelser, who went 2-for-7 from the line early in the game, made all seven attempts in the fourth quarter for Hampshire.

"They outrebounded us by a margin of five (32-27)," Elliott told PhDispatch.com by email. "I was disappointed that we did not play better. We just came off a three-game win streak, with wins against Fort Hill and Mountain Ridge."

The two teams play again on Friday, this time in Romney, W.Va.

"I hope that we play better and the outcome is different," Elliott said after a "very frustrating game. We lost a chance to gain some ground on the Rams. That is why this loss is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth."
