FROSTBURG, March 17 -- It wasn't close. But it was closer than it might have been.

Bishop Walsh junior Pat Jones said he thought his team's 69-52 loss to DeMatha Catholic, among the top-ranked teams on the east coast, was "respectable."

The Spartans trailed by 16 points at halftime of the opening game of the 51st annual A.C.I.T. at Frostburg State University. A quick 15-3 burst out of the gates to open the third quarter put the Stags up by 28 points, 58-30.

It could have gone down hill. Quick. Spartans coach Bob Boyle said despite some miscues, he was proud of the way his players battled back against a team with superior size, speed and, arguably, ability.

"It's not so much skill that separates us," said Jones. "It's size and speed. As you can see, it's tough to compensate."
