MOUNT SAVAGE, April 9 -- Keyser senior Wes Washington, who helped the Golden Tornado come oh-so-close to upsetting Oak Hill in a West Virginia Class AA semifinal game, was named Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

The award was voted upon by coaches, who submitted a list of two to three players each whom they felt deserved first or second-team honors. A ballot was compiled and the nine conferences coaches met and voted. On the first ballot, the top vote-getter (washington) was named Player of the Year, and the others were placed on the All-AMAC First Team.

On a second ballot, coaches voted for the remaining players. The top five vote-getters were named to the second-team all conference. The rest were put on honorable mention.

Keyser lost to the heavily favored team, 66-65. Washington was named PhDispatch.com Boys Co-Player of the Year a month ago along with Northern Garrett's Matt Gibson.

Washington, along with First Team honoree Peyton Hartman and PhDispatch.com Coach of the Year Gary Liston, led the Golden Tornado to a 21-5 record and only a single loss to a AA team all year - that being against Oak Hill.

Hartman and Northern Garrett's Matt Gibson - who shared PhDispatch.com's Player of the Year honors with Washington - tied for second among coaches' voting, only four points behind Washington.
