FROSTBURG, April 17-- Relegated to just six points in the first half, Keyser senior Peyton Hartman took over in the second on both ends of the court as Team West Virginia beat Team Maryland 104-83 on Sunday in the 31st annual All-Star Basketball Classic.

And at times, Hartman's domination was downright scary. Just ask Aaron Murphy.

Hartman had added a single bucket midway through the second half to give the West Virginia high school seniors a 74-64 lead with nine minutes and 12 seconds left in the 20-minute half. Up 76-66, Murphy, a center from Allegany, went up for a layup but was blocked by Hartman.

To say the least, the play was unexpected - at least from Murphy's point of view.

"That scared me," Murphy said with a sheephish grin after the play. "you came out of nowhere!"

Hartman led five teammates in double figures with 17 points. It was that kind of afternoon for Team Maryland, who lost by a wide margin for the second straight year.

A repeat was in the cards for the girls game, too. Last year, Team Maryland lost by four points. This time, it was much closer than that.

Tucker County's Audrea Hull went on a personal 8-2 run to give West Virginia a 45-44 lead with about seven minutes to play. But Maryland, led by Northern Garrett's Kaitlynn Fratz with a game-high 18 points, charged back. Fratz knotted the score 45-45 after a bucket and, with 6:31 to play, one of two free throws found the net.

West Virginia took a 52-45 lead and only 2:08 remained on the clock. Fratz responded with a 3-pointer and then made three of four foul shots to pull Maryland to within 52-51.

Frankfort's Savannah Hose hit two free throws with 26.8 seconds to play to put the West Virginia squad up 54-41. A key occurrence - almost a game-winner, in fact - took place in between foul shots, as Maryland coach Steve Fratz put Bishop Walsh's Ashley Turnbull back to play center.

The move paid off just a few seconds later. Northern Garrett's Terra McKenzie missed on a 3-point attempt but Turnbull grabbed the rebound and made the contested layup to pull her team within 54-53 with 16.4 seconds left on the clock.

A controversial call by the referees gave possession to Maryland with 13.4 seconds to go. Fratz threw the inbounds pass to Mountain Ridge's Madi Nightengale, who was fouled. Unfortunately for the Maryland team, Nightengale missed both free throws.

Hartman paces West Virginia past Maryland

Team West Virginia led just 43-39 between two 20-minute halves but opened the second half with a 19-2 run. Hartman scored 7 points in that stretch and Keyser teammate Wes Washington had five points.

Bishop Walsh senior Richie Mann (16 points) hit a 3-pointer with 10:18 to play to pull Maryland within 72-64. After a bucket by Allegany's Aaron Murphy, though, West Virginia went on another run - this time outscoring Maryland 14-3 over a 2:36 stretch. With 5:17 to go, the West Virginia squad led 90-69.
