Miners stay undefeated with 60-28 win against Spartans
Mountain Ridge eager to get back on court after eight-day layoff
By The Potomac Highlands Dispatch
CUMBERLAND., Dec. 18 - Through two games, Madi Nightengale is still working out a bit of anxiety.
Just wait until she starts feeling comfortable. The Mountain Ridge standout nearly tripled the amount of points posted in her team's season opener to lead the Minesr past host Bishop Walsh on Saturday, 60-28.
Nightengale finished with 17 points, including two 3-pointers, and added four steals to her effort. She was limited to 6 points in the Miners' 50-40 season-opening win against Fort Hill on Dec. 8.
Since then, Mountain Ridge has waited out multiple weather events that have postponed two games. Saturday's game, one of two that have been rescheduled due to snow, was their first time on the court in a game in eight days.
Mountain Ridge coach Valery Broadwater said it was nice just to be back on the court. Defensively, the Miners got off to a slow start - at least by their standard - by forcing only three first-half turnovers.
Broadwater's halftime message hit home for the Miners (2-0, 2-0 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference), who forced the Spartans (1-6, 0-2) into turning the ball over 13 times in the final 16 minutes.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference. In the past two games in the AMAC, Bishop Walsh has yielded a total of 130 points, including 70 to visiting Fort Hill only three days ago.
Spartans coach John Steiner said the team played good defense for the second straight game. It's the lack of offense, however, that puts so much pressure on his squad.
"we don't executive our offense," Steiner said. "When we get the shot that we want, it doesn't go in the basket."
Bishop Walsh next plays on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at home against Frankfort. Mountain Ridge travels to Hampshire in what is expected to be a close AMAC contest against the Trojans. That game is scheduled for Tuesday night.
